Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. In fact, it’s just as important for your loved one with schizophrenia that you look after your own health needs.

Schizophrenia can place an incredible amount of stress on the family. It can take over your life and burn you out.

And if you’re stressed, you’ll make the person with schizophrenia stressed and trigger or exacerbate their symptoms.

It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.

Connect with others. Social interaction with someone who cares about you is the most effective way to relieve stress.

It’s important for both you and the person with schizophrenia to have other people you can connect with face-to-face—someone you can talk to for an uninterrupted period of time, someone who will listen without judging or continually becoming distracted.

That person may be a friend, family member, clergy member, or professional therapist.

It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.

Easier said than done, with no visiting, social distancing. It gets hard some days.

So what I do is have me time, do what I want and ignore everything around me for an hour or two.
This helps more than I thought it would. I call it my refocusing time.

It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.
